Recently I read this adorable book called Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa. I loved it. I had seen the movie first, years ago, which is based on the book (I think it’s available currently on Prime).
It is all about a man who owes someone money and so he is selling dorayaki to pay off his debt at a small stand. He is in a bit of a rough spot. An elderly woman begins helping him but as it turns out, she has a secret past. I’ll leave it at that so that I don’t spoil it for anyone!
There is a paragraph in the book that really hit home when I read it. Here is my favorite part:
“I began to understand that we were born in order to see and listen to the world. And that’s all this world wants of us. It doesn’t matter that I was never a teacher or a member of the workforce, my life had meaning.”
How beautiful is that?
Our lives have meaning just because. And maybe the meaning of it all is simply to see and hear the world and each other. And be kind to one another, too. 🙂
