First Sentences

You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?

You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?”

Once again, I did not make it to the gym that day.

Okay, maybe that wouldn’t be my opening sentence. But it would sum up this year quite nicely. And in my defense, today I am running on very little sleep, had an early morning work meeting, and on top of that a very busy day in which none of us got lunch. So if I went to the gym, I probably would have launched myself off the treadmill or dropped a weight on my foot. So instead, I sat in my car for 15 minutes after work, decompressing while listening to metal and eating some almonds, before proceeding to drive home.

Plus… I am just not in my gym arc. It might be (in part) because I tend to go after work when the place is packed and smells like a high school gym. I mean, I can walk outside for an hour. Love it! But jogging has not been a thing since I got the flu. But also– I have a five mile race coming up in April. So how am I gonna train for that thing??? (The answer is a little bit at a time. I started by power walking on the treadmill with the incline cranked up.)

Missing the gym now and then is not the end of the world. Celebrate the wins (I made it there twice this week already). Sometimes we have to rest! While I am all for keeping commitments, there are days that I know if I end up pushing myself too much, I will pay for it.

So while the first line of my autobiography might be, Once again, I did not make it to the gym that day. My second line could be, But, I did make it twice that week.
