Time

Daily writing prompt
Do you need time?

“Do you need time?”

Well I have time. We all do. The problem I think is that I can get so busy with being busy that it starts to feel like I don’t have time.

On a bad day- If I come home from work for instance, dragging work along with me, then it ends up feeling like I’m still working. I think about work while I’m getting dinner ready, while I’m eating. After I’m done eating dinner with my boyfriend. While we’re cleaning up. I’ll spend an hour on my phone going through pointless emails just to try to get my mind off work. And then go for a walk maybe, to try and unwind. And then before I know it, it’s time to get ready for work again.

Or, on a much better day- I can leave work, take off my badge and my watch (these little actions trigger my mind into letting go of work that day), and immediately go for a walk. I can clear my head before even going home. I can go home and be more present at dinner. And I can spend time reading a book after we’re done. Staying unplugged for a while.

I use work as an example because that’s a good one for me.

Part of feeling like I don’t have enough time is because when I focus on the urgent more than the important, I lose my focus. It is all too easy in this day and age to lose track of days and weeks, not making any headway on the things that truly matter.

Taking a minute to pause and consider this often helps- I have all the time I need to do what really matters, today, right now. I don’t have all the time to do everything for everybody.

I also need to remind myself that there are no guarantees in life. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. What I do have is this day that has been given to me, like a gift. What am I going to do with it?
