After being an adult for so long, it’s funny to look back and consider when I really felt like one. But I think it first hit me when I was a couple years into college and decided to stay at school over the summer, renting my own place, paying all my bills, getting my own food, etc. I loved being there over the summer, when things quieted down and most of the students went home. I went to a very big school that would be packed from late August to May. Football weekends were even worse in terms of sheer numbers of people.
It hit me again when I bought a house with my then husband. And again, years later, when I got divorced. The getting married part didn’t feel as adult as the divorced part, for some reason. Maybe because it was more difficult? Less fun?
Being a “grown up” has a lot of plusses, but a lot of responsibilities too… if we’re lucky, we trade the carefree-ness of childhood for the freedom of adulthood. Some of us didn’t have a carefree childhood and had to grow up way too fast.
I probably had a little of both- early responsibilities that happened as a result of my parents’ divorce- but before that, years of just being a kid, with the biggest responsibility I had being to clean my room on Saturday mornings, and say my prayers before I went to bed.
Sometimes I like to reminisce about those childhood days, playing on a grassy hill and lying there, in a field, nothing to do but watch clouds move lazily across the sky. It makes for a good childhood memory, one of my favorites, and one that I am very grateful to have.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of another work week for me, and in another week the start of my final class in my RN to BSN program. I will be glad to finish and get that part of “adulting” out of the way!
I hope everyone has a restful Sunday.
