Profound? Maybe.

Daily writing prompt
What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given? Did you take it?

Part one

Like many people, I reached a point in my life when I gave up on having any relationship with a Higher Power. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but it was sometime during that 16-20 year age. I grew up Catholic, and went to nine years of Catholic school. I attended church at least twice a week, sometimes more. I spent a lot of time there, and I had God of my childhood with all that entailed. There were many beautiful parts of Catholicism that still speak to me-especially the role of Mary and the rosary.

Then came a lot of questioning. And I fell away from structured church activities for the most part.

After 10 years or so, I found my way to a group of women in a spirituality/support group. I had shared about my struggles with any concept of God or any Higher Power whatsoever. And one of them said, “that’s okay, you can borrow ours.”

???

I don’t know how profound that is or not. But- that day when I heard those words, it sounded simultaneously ridiculous and profound. Ridiculously profound.

So I tried it. And it worked.

Part two: Another bit of advice

This one came from a romance novel of all things, of the stuck-in-a-snowstorm trope variety. In it, a girl gets rescued by her favorite band, and ends up writing every morning with one of the band members. She isn’t sure where to start, but he tells her to write down something, otherwise she will have nothing.

Write something, or you’ll have nothing(??!!)

Profound? Maybe, maybe not! But I can’t help but keep coming back to that line!

I can’t wait to read some more profound advice from all you writers out there! and if you like what I write, please subscribe. Thanks!

I love these two pieces of advice. Sometimes when you struggle with something, “borrowing” others belief or habits can make the difference and soon it’s become yours just as much as it was there. It’s a safe place to start without pressure of getting it right especially in a supportive environment. I’m still looking for that space.
Also books offer many great advice and I really love that one about writing something or you will have nothing. If you dont start or make the effort, then you will have nothing to show.

Thank you for this thoughtful reply. I love the way you described it. You are so right, it’s that safe place that we need, and support. I wouldn’t have figured it out on my own.
