If you or someone you know is starting chemo, this one’s for you.
People don’t always know what to bring. Here are the 3 things I tell people to bring along, especially for their first day and if they are going to be there a long day of treatment:
#1 A blanket or hoodie
Bring something cozy. While we do have a whole blanket warmer full of- you guessed it- warm blankets, it’s nice to have something like your own blanket or hoodie to cuddle up with.
#2 Snacks and water
Bring something to eat and drink. We do have snacks, and I will gladly bring you all the cheez-its and ginger ales you’d like, but it’s nice to have some of your own favorite snacks too. And here’s another tip- please bring lunch if you are going to be there all day! Maybe your center is bigger and has a cafeteria. That works too. Or you might have someone along who is going to go and get you lunch. Some patients order their own food and have it delivered. Any of those options work, too.
#3 Phone/tablet/book
Bring something to keep you busy. A phone is good. A phone plus a book and some earbuds? Even better. Bring a few things along so you don’t get bored. Trust me, your nurses are not that much fun to watch run around. (Okay, sometimes we’re mildly amusing.)
Something to keep you cozy. Something to keep you fed and hydrated. And something to keep you occupied. The big 3 for your first day of chemo. ๐
If you would like to know my next favorite 3 things to tell people, they are:
- A friend/family member/loved one
- Pain medications if you are taking them regularly
- Any questions or concerns
That’s it! I’ll get the pillows ready.
