So Is Fruit Like, Bad???

No. No, it’s not! As a matter of fact, fruit is really good for you. Even though it has- GASPsugar. Sugar that’s in candy or sodas gets absorbed very quickly in the body. But the sugar in fruit is absorbed more slowly because of fiber. This means that you don’t get the “crash” associated with other sugars (like white sugar or corn syrup).

Here’s six reasons why it’s good to eat fruit:

  1. It is filling, in a good way!
  2. May help reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, oral cancer, breast cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke.
  3. It tastes good.
  4. It helps you hydrate.
  5. Vitamins! Think vitamin C, A, folates, and potassium.
  6. It’s good for the bacteria in your gut.

Juices aren’t as good. It may be tempting to have that glass of orange juice instead of the orange. But the fruit sugar in juices doesn’t have that fiber surrounding it, so it’s going to be absorbed quickly in the body. I hate to say it but that goes for those juices in your juicer too. They’ve had the fiber taken right out. It doesn’t mean you can’t ever have juice, but the idea is to gravitate more to the whole piece of fruit.

So have an apple. Eat an orange. Find a new fruit at the store to try. And relax knowing that you’re doing something good for yourself.

P.S. Don’t eat fruit if you are allergic to it or if for some reason your doc told you not to! Grapefruit, for instance, does not play nice with some medications! Always check with your provider first if you have any questions.
