Screen Time

Daily writing prompt
How do you manage screen time for yourself?

It can be hard to manage screen time. I consider my phone, computer, and TV to all be part of the “screen” category.

Screen time can be productive- I’m thinking of time spent writing- so it’s not always a “bad” thing. But I am trying to be more mindful of it. I don’t want to spend my whole life staring at a screen. This is just me personally. I know there are lots of people who are really into gaming and the like, and if it’s intentional, that’s one thing. But when I get “lost” in the time I spend online, or watching tv, or whatever, that’s when life is just passing me by. And that’s why I want to be intentional with it.

When I was young, we didn’t have a TV for a while, and there were definitely no cell phones, no hand-held game systems. And that’s when we’d get bored, and we’d have the time to think of thinks on our own, or to even just think.

And I want more of that in my life today. More time to be bored, and just think, without anyone necessarily telling me what to believe, or what to listen to, or what I should be doing. I get some of my best ideas when I get bored.

“We start wherever we start.” This is what my writing teacher told us in class a couple months ago. And this goes for everything in life. We start wherever we are at. That means, I need to be aware of how I’m acting or what I’m doing before I can change it. Then, I have to accept it. That doesn’t mean I like it. Acceptance is where I have to start from in order to make any meaningful change. After that, I can take some action.

So today, I’m just going to be aware. How much time am I spending in front of a screen these days? I’m in front of one right now! But almost done. I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s thoughts on this one. When we share ideas, we are helping each other out.
