In this day and age, I feel like schools are doing the best they can with the lessons they teach. I spent a lot of time homeschooling my kids and had a fair number of opinions about what should be taught in school, but I was also very much in favor of child-led learning with a very healthy dose of “lessons” that I came up with.
What I wanted was for my kids to be taught a love of learning. And I’m not sure that is something that can be taught. I think my kids do love to learn- I see them do it all the time nowadays in their adult lives. So I guess I accomplished what I set out to do!
I can’t help but think of all the things we did while homeschooling that I’m not sure we would have ever done had we not been homeschooling. Things like:
Raise a couple rabbits
Join 4H
Mummify a chicken (okay this was actually part of a history lesson, was NOT a live chicken, and no, I didn’t come up with the idea. We followed directions and used a lot of salt lol. Would I do it again? Absolutely not.)
Spend a couple weeks digging a giant hole in the backyard because we kept finding cool things like little glass bottles and old coins.
Go on as many field trips as we did (there were, admittedly, a lot).
So yeah, I wish schools taught a love of learning, and also I wish they taught more about money, budgeting, and compound interest. I think I could have used some more knowledge in that regard when I was younger!
