What’s the first book you ever finished and still remember to this day?

Some of my favorite books that have stuck with me for 40+ years are from my childhood…

Oh What a Busy Day by Gyo Fujikawa. What can I say about this one? I love it to pieces. I’ve read this book hundreds of times. I’d spend hours pouring over the pictures when I was little. I read it to my kids when they were old enough. The drawings are so endearing. It is full of little rhymes, a variety of poems, and takes us through a day with all these little children that you can’t help but adore. It’s not exactly a quick read, but each of the pages can stand on their own. Not a story from start to finish exactly, just takes you through a random childhood day.

Roses are Red, Are Violets Blue?? A First Book About Color by Alice and Martin Provensen. This was one of those childhood books full of poems, color, and was just fun to read. There’s a picture of a rainbow fish in it that is literally a rainbow.

The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes is a Newbery Honor Award winner. This is a book that I felt very deeply when I read it for some reason. A young girl wears the same dress every day and gets bullied because of it. She says she has one hundred dresses at home. A touching story that stuck with me and taught me to be kind because we don’t know what people may be going through or living with.

The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien. You’ve probably heard of Frodo and his companions by now. The funny thing is, I read this story when I was in 7th grade or thereabouts, and I could not imagine that Frodo was ever going to make it. I remember getting to the end of the book, thinking–what is this little hobbit going to do??? I didn’t read the rest of the trilogy until decades later. I just couldn’t do it. I saw all the movies before I read the rest of the books (loved those movies!) But it was one of those books that just stuck with me.

Dune by Frank Herbert was another one of those 7th grade reads that has always stuck with me. I grew up in the 70s/80s and this book gave me such an appreciation for sci-fi and made me a fan. It’s just so epic and was honestly pretty mind-blowing to me as a kid!

Those are some of my favorites! I love to read, can’t wait to see what everyone else wrote about with this one.

Thanks for reading! If you like what I write, please subscribe. 🙂
