I was a 70s/80s kid.
And while I’ve written about my gaming obsessions before, along with my space/alien obsession, I’m not sure that I’ve really gotten into Space Invaders a whole lot.
I loved that game. Played it until my eyeballs would practically dry up from not blinking for 45 minutes straight. We played it until the aliens were coming so fast, you really didn’t even have time to think anymore. You figured out what worked and you kept doing that. Again. And again. And again. Until eventually your score would get so high that it would flip back around to zero.
As I grew older, I started going to arcades. Once I reached high school age, they were really catching on. Arcades were so much fun. Instant access to tons of games that you might not otherwise have been able to play. Mortal Kombat. Q*Bert. Tron. Pole Position. Pac-Man. (I just so happen to have Pac-Man socks on right now.) Vangard. Tetris.
All you needed was a bunch of quarters. (Or dollars to turn into quarters. :P) People used to smoke at the arcade. Can you imagine such a thing?
So yeah… I was fairly obsessed with video games as a kid.
It went underground for a while when I was in college. And as soon as I had kids my gaming days were back. Stay tuned for Space/Invaders Part II, in which I discover Webkinz and Minecraft.
