It’s been 50 years. Fifty years since it came out- Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here. I was toddling about the year it came out. But my parents were big music fans, and I grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Moody Blues…my mom would throw in some Beethoven now and then. But of all those heavy-hitters I listened to growing up, Pink Floyd is my favorite.
Wish You Were Here is my “stranded on a desert island” album. I’ve listened to it too many times to count. It’s been a long time since I listened to the whole thing in one sitting. It seems like those times when I had the time to do that are too few and far between.
Do you remember doing that? Or have you done that recently? Listen to a whole album start to finish? Getting up only to flip it over to the other side? It sounds too self-indulgent, when there is so much going on in life that seems to need my attention. There is too much news to read. Too many tragedies demanding our attention. Too much work, too many chores, too many emails. But those times when I can sit and listen, not doing much of anything…. nowhere to go and nothing to do… just relaxing. That, to me, is just as important as the doing. And I think I’m going to give Wish You Were Here a good listen today.
