A Lifelong Love- Music

Daily writing prompt
What would your life be like without music?

I can’t remember exactly when music became so important to me. It’s like breathing. It’s just such a huge part of my life. I love heavy metal, and that’s my go-to. I’m the mom that would pull up the family SUV with death metal blaring. But I also love classical music, pop, classic rock, a little country…. lo-fi hip hop is on much of the time when I’m sitting at my computer. I get chills listening to new music that really moves me. I can’t imagine my life without it.

I like playing music too, although this year I haven’t done a lot of it. I’ve missed it. Last year, I started learning how to play the cello. As a (ahem) “mature” learner, I have to say that it has been humbling to say the least. Have you heard little kids learn to play string instruments??? Imagine that but with a big person. Cellos are loud. And you have to let go of the fact that you sound like a cat crying in pain and keep playing anyway. It’s gotten better. I’ve gotten better. I can even make my way through a couple Lord of the Rings songs. Misty Mountains is my favorite.

My teacher is about as old as my kids, maybe even a little younger. And it’s been so much fun. I took a break when she went away for the holidays last year and then got so busy this year that I never made it back. But I’m thinking it might be time. My downstairs neighbors have had enough of a break. And I’d like to learn some Christmas carols.
